.: Working class food

Left-overs, onions strips & potatoes cubes. What are you thinking about ? Just left-overs? No! Tastytastytastyfood! Arista di maiale (avanzata!), sfilaccini di cipolle e patate in padella. Solo avanzi ? No! BBBuuoooni!

“Working Class Hero” is a song by John Lennon. A political song, the song is a commentary/criticism on the difference between social classes. It tells the story of someone growing up in the working class.

I think potatoes and onions have often been thought of as “poor food”. But I think no food is poor food. Neither certainly onions, nor certainly potatoes. Every food comes from the efforts of someone who has grown it and we should pay the maximum respect to each kind of food and to those who have the ability to feed other people.

So tonight I pay an homage to potatoes & onions, and I pay an homage to my father who loves potatoes & onions (tomorrow it’s his b-day!!), and to those who care for food. In the past days my mother cooked a wonderful roasted pork loin. But she also cooked other things, so some roast was left. And I hate wasting things, food, most of all.
No poor food, but Kings’n’queens food. You bet.

Peel potatoes and onions. Cut potatoes in small cubes.

Boil the potato cubes for 3-4 minutes in water.

Cut the onions in strips.

In the pan put some of the grease from the left roast. Cook the potatoes a few minutes. When they’re half done, add the onions.

Then add the roast, just to warm it up.

You’ll have a great dish, with onions, potatoes and left-overs. Ok. avanzi, cipolle e patate. Sembra niente, ma è qualcosa di fantastico.

Green Day contributed a cover of the song to the “Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur” in 2007. A person says “all the people want to live equal in Sudan. My dream”, in this video. I think “all the people want to live equal” everywhere. Unfortunately not many wants to be “working class heroes”. Maybe they think potatoes & onions is just “poor food”.

There’s room at the top they’re telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill

.: (We’re all) wayfaring strangers

Roaming, rambling, trembling… sometimes we don’t know very well where we’re going but we keep on going. A volte vaghiamo, non sappiamo bene dove siamo diretti… ma non possiamo fermarci.

Mele e maiale. Vi sembra strano ? Sì, anche a me. Però m’è piaciuto. L’unico difetto è che il maiale che avevo in casa non era un taglio abbastanza morbido. Ma voi ora lo sapete e potete rimediare. Comunque guardate questa mela impastellata e fritta:

Look at this battered piece of apple:

non è tenera ??? Ain’t it lovey-dovey ?

Ok, stasera non so cosa m’è preso, ma ho impastellato tutto. E addio colesterolo. Forget the diet and fry. You’ll be happy tonight.

I took the pork meat and cut it in pieces

then you make the batter: flour, water and a bit of sunflower oil. You coat the meat and fry it.

then you cut the apple in pieces

and batter the apple too

when you’ll have fried everything your kitchen will be a mess, but you will like the taste

You can eat them together or…. just make the battered apple piece: I really think they’re great just for themselves
